In opentaps the Products and Catalogs that will be used in the Web Site Store are first configured in the Virtual Store which is the repository for data you will need. A complete discussion of this subject including Products and Catalogs is provided in the User Manual section,

Using Catalog Manager and Setting Up Your Products

A word about Catalogs may be helpful. While we often think of catalogs as being an article of marketing materials, and this is true, the term Catalog in relation to opentaps Stores is more than that. Catalogs are also the repository for business management data used within the Store as it operates.

When you read the information in Catalog Manager, referenced above, keep in mind that you will find both the marketing oriented functions of catalogs, and the business management data functionality in Catalog Manager.
