Products Bought and Sold or Used in Different Units or Sets
Frequently, products are bought in one unit or set, and then are used or sold in different units or sets. For example, you might purchase 1000 kg of something and sell it by the pound.
In opentaps, such adjustments to different units or sets are handled by creating the base product with it's own units or in it's own sets, and then creating as separate products the alternate items in their new units or new sets. Then these different products are associated with each other through a Bill Of Material and a simple "manufacturing" process that repackages to make the unit or set changes required.
This allows you to track the respective inventories of initial product and adjusted products independently of each other, which is very important. Also, you can set prices for the adjusted packages with their units or sets, which are not directly related or proportional to the cost of initial base product units or sets.
Using Marketing Package Type Products
If you have a product which is always repackaged from one or more base products when you produce it for sale, you can create it with product type "Marketing Package." Whenever a sales order is created, a product of the type Marketing Package is automatically produced from its Bill Of Material, and its component products are automatically used up. Note that if the order is not fulfilled, then the repackaged, Marketing Package type, product will still be in inventory. You can use execute a Reverse Assembly operation to turned the Marketing Package back into its original components for restocking to inventory if that is desired.
Using Purchasing Package Type Products
If you have a product that is purchased in a different quantity then is needed for the inventory used for sale or for production, you can create a product of the type "Purchasing Package." Whenever a Purchasing Package type product is received into the opentaps warehouse, Reverse Assembly executes automatically for it, and it will be turned into its components for stocking as needed. This is based upon a Bill Of Material you have specified for the items. For example, if you purchase a product in units of 1000 but want to keep inventory in units of 1, you can use this "Purchasing Package Type" processing. If you need to reconstitute an original purchased package for any reason, you can create a production run to put it back together from the smaller quantity items in inventory.
